The Cultural Affairs Division of the City of Santa Monica needed awareness. As a hugely influential organization for city sanctioned public art, they tended to fly mostly under the radar to the average resident of Santa Monica. We worked with them to change this by establishing “ArtSaMo” (Art Santa Monica), a recognizable and easy to understand brand platform for the masses. ArtSaMo’s typographic style and design system makes the actual artwork the hero, showcasing it and presenting it to city residents in an exciting way.

We used the images of public art as “color” within a shell of typography. With a compendium palette of artsy color combinations and a simple set of icons, we created a look that felt well saddled alongside the city’s beautiful works of art. ArtSaMo also acts as an umbrella to several institutions that the Santa Monica Cultural Affairs Division manages including Camera Obscura, The Miles Playhouse, The Annenberg Community Beach House, and the Civic Auditorium. The platform centers around one main message: Go See Art. Over time, it has encompassed the Art in the Park series of events like Indigenous Now and Jazz on the Lawn and continues to spread awareness of city funded art throughout Santa Monica.
